Living It Up On the Westside

Cars are being broken into every other week in West Asheville. 2 cars have been stolen from my street in the last two years. I'm tired of it. I've replaced three bicycles now and this last time they slashed my convertible's top. I'm spending as much on taxes to live in the city as i am losing in stolen property...which all leaves me feeling like i should move.

The crime is getting worse. I have one big push of energy to put towards fixing this before i just give up and move to the country. Will you help me fix our neighborhood?

I am organizing a meeting with resource officers. They said they want to have atleast 25 people present. In the last few days i have comfirmed interest from at least 20.

Join this discussion, list your break ins when they happen, file police reports, and tell us if you are interested in a community meeting on the subject. Numbers talk! Let's get at least 100 people together and have a productive meeting. I'll organize it, you just have to care and come.

Lock your doors (till further notice :-)

Sage,

If there is any way to humanly work this into my schedule (working student), I'd love to attend the resource meeting and the community meeting. Please keep us posted.

Just thought it would be worth mentioning this. I have lived on Pennsylvania Ave. for 4 years. During that time I have had nothing stolen even though I sometimes leave the house unlocked (it would be easy to break into even when locked), sometimes leave the car unlocked (why make them break a window?), and often leave my bike unlocked on the back porch.

I'm not saying do as I do, just saying this is my experience, for some perspective, and I live in the middle of the supposedly high-crime area between Pisgah View and Burton St.

I understand your frustration and I think this discussion group is a good step. Neighbors watching out for neighbors can really help too.

I am interested, especially in the wake of armed robberies on Haywood and Fairfax.
